World War I
THE NAMES REQUESTED FOR
INCLUSION ON THE TOWN MEMORIAL
The Dover War Memorial Project receives many enquiries about
Dovorian casualties whose names are not included on the Town
Memorial.
The Memorial is
now scheduled to be updated every three years with additional
names; the last update was in 2009 with a
dedication on Armistice Day. Below are the names of casualties whose relatives
and friends have
requested their inclusion since that update. Should you wish to add your loved one
to the list for consideration in 2012, please
contact us
Please also see
"Casualties Missing from the
Town Memorial" for information on
why names may not have been included.
CURRENT
REQUESTS
for names to be included in the update to the Town
Memorial scheduled for 2012. The final decision rests with Dover
Town Council, who are responsible for the care and maintenance
of our Memorial. We will submit the names to the Council, with supporting information, during January 2012.
Amongst the list below are civilians who were
killed during the Great War. With the exception of one civilian,
commemorated at the Salem Baptist Church, Dover, none of the
twenty Great War civilian casualties are publicly commemorated
anywhere. At the time of the erection of the Town Memorial in
1924, these casualties were listed by the then Town Clerk, with
a view to their inclusion; However owing to various problems at
the time, these and other casualties were not included.
The Dover War Memorial Project wrote to the
Town Council on 6 October 2010 requesting that at the next
update of the Town Memorial a special plaque be also dedicated
to those civilians. They have replied with thanks for the
information, and stated that full consideration of names will be
given nearer the time of the next update in 2012.
